Sortition is where you pick people to govern at random from the population. Maybe this is something you’ve thought about, but you never knew was a real thing… with a name. I certainly didn’t know. I also didn’t know that it was used in ancient Greece, cf. Aristotle:

It is accepted as democratic when public offices are allocated by lot; and as oligarchic when they are filled by election.

Besides the advantages and disadvantages that are well explained in the Wikipedia article, I think that there is good motivation for this system in the common sentiment that “I could do a better job than that asshole Stephen Harper.” I actually agree. I know it sounds naive, but I do think that the average person could do a better job of governing than most politicians. Why? Because I also believe in the accuracy of these two common sentiments: that the kind of person who seeks power is exactly the wrong kind of person to govern, and that being in politics for an extended amount of time turns you rotten.
